Hard Skills to put to work

Ever since the beginning of my professional career, I have been focusing on my skills: developing basic techniques and specializing in certain directions, further training existing skills and acquiring new ones. Always keep on learning!

Daily business requires the ability to work independently, prioritize and balance out each decision. There are fantastic support tools – I personally prefer an open-source tool called Trello which I use for both professional and private purposes.

Although ePub 3 is supposed to provide the eBook standard with astonishing interactive elements, not many platforms support them at the moment. In fact, iBooks is still the platform that comes closest to the IDPF standard.

There are amazing tools to create beautifully enhanced eBooks in ePub format … but doing it from scratch is a great way, too. For instance, one may export the file out of Adobe InDesign and edit the resulting well-prepared ePub file via Sigil.

Since the beginning of my professional career, I appreciated a decent layout. Adobe InDesign is my favorite software – especially now that the interface is customizable. And Adobe XD is a great editor for wireframes.

When it comes to visualizing, which software to choose depends on the output channel. Technologies and requirements change quickly, though. E.g. for the Tigerbooks workflow, Adobe Flash used to be the best choice and got replaced later on.

In my eyes, it is very important to pay attention to the details. The way colors and shapes are being combined perfectly in relation to the actual content gives me a lot to ponder on, preferably in Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator.

Soft Skills to explore

Hard skills are not everything. In fact, nowadays it is even more crucial to stay creative and focused on a collaborative approach.

OPEN-MINDED

Interesting conversations with inspiring individuals, new software, fancy gadgets … all of it makes me want to know more and grow continuously. Hence, I walk through my life with eyes wide open, eager to learn and ready to get surprised.

TRANSPARENT

I am convinced that agile project management contributes to more client- and customer-oriented work. There are many great tools such as Teams or Trello to keep on track with changing conditions and to (re)adjust priorities accordingly.

TRUSTWORTHY

In general, I value and appreciate a trustful and professional way to communicate. Even though it gets tough sometimes, honest and direct communication pays off in the end – as it does for every part of one’s life.

PROBLEM SOLVER

For me as an engineer for Print and Media Technology, it is all about workflows. And wherever automatic production is not possible, I feel passionate about finding an individual solution for each problem.

FAST LEARNER

Some workarounds may require switching the technology. However, with deadlines in mind, adapting the former production process might be hard. It is worth it, though, and saves more effort, eventually.

TEAM PLAYER

Being part of a team means a lot to me, especially since I usually work by myself as a freelancer. Whether it is brainstorming for a kick-off meeting or on-going knowledge exchange – it is an essential part of my work to get to know others’ point of views and exchange perspective.

My favorite quote
On ne voit bien qu’avec le cœur.
L’essentiel est invisible pour les yeux.
